Siding is the part of the house people replace for looks and should be replacing for water. Once the old material comes off you usually find the real story underneath.
What is behind the siding
Housewrap that was never lapped correctly so it channels water inward. Window flashing that drains the wrong way. Soft sheathing at the sill where it has been getting in for a decade. None of this is visible until the siding comes off, and all of it is cheap to fix at that moment and expensive to fix at any other.
Building a drainage plane
New siding goes on over a corrected, continuous weather barrier with windows properly integrated into it, and over a rain screen so anything that gets behind the cladding can drain and dry. This is the difference between siding that lasts and siding that traps moisture against the sheathing.
The parts you see
Vertical board-and-batten, shake, timber entry gables and covered stoops, stone veneer at the foundation, and exterior trim wrapped so it will not need painting in three years. Ice-dam detailing at the eaves matters more here than in most of the country and gets addressed while the exterior is open.

Exterior Renovations- Can you side over the existing siding?
- We do not recommend it and generally will not. Going over the top hides whatever is wrong underneath and gives water a place to sit. The whole value of a siding job is the chance to see and fix the envelope while it is open.
- What if you find rot once the siding is off?
- We stop, show you exactly what we found, and give you options and costs before doing anything further. Finding some rot on an older Western New York house is common rather than alarming — what matters is that you see it and decide, rather than hearing about it afterward.
- Do you do full exteriors or just siding?
- Full exteriors: siding, trim, entry structures, stone veneer, and the weather envelope behind all of it. If the job also needs roofing or windows we will coordinate that with you as part of the sequence.
