Custom Finish Carpentry
Finish carpentry is bench work more than framing, and it is the part of a house you touch every day. It is also the first thing to get value-engineered out of a build and the thing people most regret losing.
Stairs
A stair is the one piece of millwork everything else in the foyer has to agree with. We mill treads from solid quarter-sawn stock, anchor newel posts into the framing rather than fastening them to the finish, and build and fit handrails on site, because no two old stairs are square. The result is a stair that does not move when you lean on it.
Built-ins that fit the house
Mudroom lockers, window banquettes, fireplace surrounds and mantels, bookcases, coffered ceilings. Built for the space they go in rather than adapted to it, which is what makes them read as original to the house instead of purchased for it.
Trim and millwork
Wainscoting laid out so the panel lines land where the eye expects them. Casing and crown that meet correctly at every corner. Solid-core interior doors hung so they stay closed. In older village homes this often means matching an existing profile that has not been sold in eighty years, which we do by milling it.

Common questions
Finish Carpentry- Will you do carpentry as a standalone job?
- Yes. Plenty of our finish carpentry is a single room or a single stair rather than part of a larger remodel. It is a good way to work with us on something smaller before taking on a full project.
- Can you match the trim in my older home?
- Usually. Older profiles are rarely still sold, so matching means milling a knife to the existing profile and running new stock. It costs more than stock trim and it is the only way an addition or repair disappears into an older house.
- Do you build cabinetry in a shop or on site?
- Both, depending on the piece. Cabinet boxes and doors are shop work; stairs, built-ins fitted to out-of-square walls, and anything scribed to an existing surface are built on site where they can be fitted properly.
